OpusWriter vs ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid is built around suggestions. Edit is built around inspection.

ProWritingAid is an editing service with monthly, annual, and lifetime plans. It reads your text on its servers and returns reports, suggested rewrites, and AI critiques. OpusWriter’s Edit workspace runs on your computer and helps you examine patterns in the chapter without changing a word. In either case, the judgment remains yours.

ProWritingAid

$120 a year

  • Premium, or $399 lifetime, or $30 month to month. Premium Pro, with more AI critiques and Sparks, is $144 a year or $699 lifetime.
  • Free plan checks 500 words at a time. AI features use daily limits or Story Credits, depending on the tool and plan.
  • Windows, Mac, and web. Needs an internet connection. 3-day money-back on yearly and lifetime plans.

OpusWriter

$129 once

  • Windows, macOS, and Linux on one license, on up to three computers.
  • Every version 1 update included. No subscription. No account.
  • 30 days free with every feature unlocked. 14-day refund after purchase.

Where ProWritingAid is stronger

  • It follows you everywhere: Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, browsers, and a dozen other apps. Edit only works on OpusWriter projects.
  • Built-in AI with nothing to set up. Rephrase, Sparks, and Chapter Critique are available within plan limits; manuscript-level critiques and the Virtual Beta Reader use separately purchased Story Credits.
  • Depth on individual concerns. Several of its 25+ reports go further into one thing, from sticky sentences to sensory detail, than an individual highlight lens does.
  • Targets tuned by document type and genre, drawn from published writing.
  • A plagiarism checker.
  • A free plan, if 500 words at a time is enough.
  • A web editor with Focus Mode, writing sessions, word-count tracking, and document storage.
  • Workshops, sprints, and a community on Premium Pro.

Where OpusWriter is stronger

  • Everything built in runs offline, on your computer. Your manuscript is never uploaded to check a comma.
  • Writing activity is captured automatically across every project, with drafting and revision kept separate, habit analysis, and a statistical finish range. ProWritingAid’s Writing Sessions are logged manually.
  • Fifty-plus lenses that teach as they mark. Each explains what it found, how to judge it in context, and when the thing it found is doing useful work.
  • Chapter analysis that knows your plan. Set the intended tension while outlining and Edit compares it with the prose.
  • Word comments and Track Changes from human editors come back into the manuscript, chapter by chapter.
  • If you want AI feedback, you choose the reader: 30+ personas with their own genre expectations and pet peeves, through your own account. OpusWriter adds no daily cap; any provider costs or limits still apply.
  • One price, once, for the whole writing studio.

Finding something isn’t the same as condemning it

ProWritingAid’s Summary Report scores your grammar, style, and spelling against target ranges drawn from published writing, tuned to the document type and genre you pick. It is a fair yardstick, and its reports separate adverbs in dialogue from adverbs in narration and let you ignore a passive sentence you meant. But the score is still the frame: green when you are inside the range, yellow when you are not.

Edit takes a different position. It marks many of the same patterns, but it doesn’t keep score, because a passive sentence, a repeated word, or an adverb may be exactly the thing the paragraph needs. Turn on only the lenses you need for this pass. Each one explains what it marks, how to judge it in context, and when it may be doing useful work. Change the colors, ignore dialogue, or add a word to your project’s exceptions. The analysis stays beside the prose. Nothing rewrites it unless you choose to apply a change.

The same goes for AI. OpusWriter has no built-in AI service and requires none. If you want the Feedback and Polish tools, connect your own provider using the included setup instructions. Even then, OpusWriter will not write your story for you.

Which should you choose?

ProWritingAid Premium costs $120 a year, or $399 for life. OpusWriter costs $129 once and includes Edit alongside planning, drafting, publishing, and series management. Three years of Premium costs more than OpusWriter does forever.
